The basics

This guide assumes you know the basics of using a smartphone and can use Google maps to get to places without assistance. If not, this guide isn’t for you.

It also assumes you have your birth certificate and social security card already. If not, get them first before starting the guide. Also don’t skip steps. Otherwise, you will unintentionally make things harder for yourself doing everything out of order.

Alright, here we go;

Go to your local HRA Job Center and apply for public assistance. (Food Stamps & Cash Assistance) Make sure and ask if you can apply for emergency food stamps. (You will receive food stamps within 1 business day)

Go ahead and pick up your EBT card from the CBIC office (NY) and set a pin while there. Make sure to remember this pin because you need it to access your food stamps and cash. If you were able to get emergency stamps, you should have them on your EBT card within 1 business day.

Go get an free Assurance Wireless smartphone from this link if you don’t already have a smartphone and you have an address to mail it to. Otherwise, go to the East 16th st and Park Ave job center in Manhattan. There are usually people out front giving away free phones to people who receive public assistance.
